A Superb Hamilton 6BB Military Pilot's Watch Issued in 1975 and Bearing Original Military Markings and Nicely Aged Tritium Lume
The Hamilton Geneve 6BB military watch is a storied timepiece with deep roots in the mid-20th century. Originating in the 1970s, this watch was commissioned by the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) for use by their armed forces. The "6BB" designation refers to its specific usage within the Royal Air Force (RAF), with "6" denoting equipment used by aircrew and "BB" being part of a broader NATO stock number.
By the 1970s the British military was back under some financial pressure, not least due to the ailing UK economy of the day. Smith's watch production was nearing the end of its days, and a new company, Hamilton began producing the W10 that was to succeed the Smiths version and was issued from 1973 to 1976. This watch was manual winding with a Hamilton calibre 649 movement, which was a rebadged ETA 2750 movement, with hack seconds, and in a suitably 1970s tonneau-shaped case. The case was also of a monocoque design and construction, which increased water resistance, and the movement could only be accessed by removing the glass!

This is a superb example of the Hamilton 6BB, a military pilots watch, robust and rigid by construction, it has survived incredibly well for near on 50 years! The dial has retained its rich black colour and boasts bold Arabic numerals, an outer minute track and lumed hour plots for visibility in low light. The original sword hands also boast their original lume and it has aged evenly along with the hour plots to a beautiful light vanilla colour. The military arrow and the circled T denoting the lume as tritium complete a very handsome dial which is encapsulated underneath shatterproof Plexiglas and encased in brushed stainless steel. On the case back you will note the original military engravings are present. This is a fantastic example and we are delighted to offer it for sale in such fine condition.
