A Beautifully Preserved WW1 Trench Watch Crafted From 9K Gold and Boasting a Stunning White Dial, c.1916

Trench watches emerged during World War I as a practical solution for soldiers needing to keep accurate time on the battlefield. Before the war, pocket watches were common, but their impracticality in combat led to innovation. Soldiers began modifying pocket watches with straps, creating the first wristwatches.

These early trench watches featured robust cases, often made of brass or silver, and protective covers for the glass to guard against shrapnel and debris. The dials were designed for readability in low light conditions, frequently incorporating radium for luminescence.

Swiss manufacturers like Omega and Longines played significant roles in producing these timepieces, which combined durability with precision. Post-war, the practicality of wristwatches caught on with civilians, influencing fashion and watchmaking trends.

Thus, trench watches not only met wartime needs but also paved the way for the wristwatch's widespread acceptance and evolution into an everyday accessory.

What's on Offer

This trench watch is crafted from 9k gold, it could have been an officers watch given the precious metal. It is in beautiful vintage condition with a stunning white dial boasting fantastic numerals which retain their original lume and a recessed sub-dial at 6 o'clock. There is a slight imperfection at 4 o'clock (hairline), but nothing that takes away from the beauty of this antique piece - it is over 100 years old, I'm sure we would have a line or two at that age!

This is a beautiful watch, it is still running and perfectly wearable although possibly not an everyday watch! A fantastic and historic piece tht should pique the interest of military and vintage lovers alike.
